In a Memorial Day tribute, more than 60 firefighters, police and first responders from the Greater Brownsville area gathered to honor their country and military at Lafayette Cemetery.
“With flags at half-mast, with the stars and stripes placed at graves, with the distribution of poppies, with colorful parades, with quiet prayers of thanksgiving and with the play of “Taps” – our national requiem – we take time to remember those who died in faraway places defending our freedoms and also our neighbors and friends who daily volunteer and put themselves in harm’s way.” – Mayor Lester Ward, keynote speaker.
As part of the ceremony, Jack Lawver, president of Brownsville Council and North Brownsville Fire Co. 1, recognized five area residents who died in the past year: Ken Sealy, Northside fire department; Ron DeSalvo, Hiller; Harold “Chops” Laughery and Jack Sabo, both of West Brownsville; and Tom Nagy, Brownsville Police Department.
